The Department of Health Responsibility Deal and what we're doing
SUBWAY® Stores has been an active member of the Department of Health Food Network Group, and can confirm that it has registered as a Responsibility Deal Partner.
SUBWAY® Stores has specifically signed up to two Food Network pledges. Artificial trans fats were removed from all SUBWAY® products in 2009, therefore it has signed up to support this pledge. SUBWAY® Stores has already made significant progress in reducing salt content across our products and in April 2010, we announced an average 33% reduction across our product range. We have also signed up to the 2012 salt targets, which collectively will deliver a further 15% reduction on 2010 targets. We now offer consumers a choice of products with salt values that range from 0.8g salt to 3.6g salt per 6" serving.
It remains a priority to ensure the quality and taste of our products is maintained and we will use an ongoing programme of consumer tests to provide feedback on lower salt content products. SUBWAY® Stores recognises the importance of providing its customers with a great tasting sandwich and salad menu and allows them to create a balanced, healthy meal of their choice.
SUBWAY® stores are committed to providing nutrition information for its customers and this information has been available in its 1,500 stores across the UK and Ireland at the point of choice for almost two years. This information includes calories, salt, fat, saturated fat and sugar per 6" Sub. The information is displayed on the glass counter front in all stores as well as on the SUBWAY® website, www.subway.co.uk.
Whilst SUBWAY® Stores is supportive of the Government's pledge to introduce out-of-home calorie labelling, at this point, it is not able to sign up to the official calorie labelling pledge. This is because the pledge requires the calorie information to be displayed on menu panels. The queuing process in SUBWAY® stores differs from other QSR's, as in SUBWAY® stores there is just one service point meaning all customers follow a defined route as part of the queuing process.
However, SUBWAY® Stores supports the provision of nutrition information, especially calorie content in our stores and has the following existing strategy in place which takes account of the pledge:
"We are researching the most appropriate and valuable method of displaying calorie information for food and drink for our customers with a view to implementing this across our store estate."
SUBWAY® Stores is currently conducting a trial in stores to establish the most effective way of displaying calorie information in-store for our customers. Once the trial has been completed, we will review our position on providing calorie information in alternative locations within SUBWAY® stores.
